Welcome to the Manx Saxophone Ensemble’s Theory reference pages.

The pages you’ll find here cover fairly standard music theory (albeit in our own delivery style), but accented towards the information a member of the band will need in order to play fluently and expressively with others.

As a starter-for-ten, we’ve concentrated on ...

Keys, Scales and Accidentals - with tables of which sharps and flats you’ll find in them, together with some hints on how to remember them.

Transposing instruments - and how they play together, again with a table to help you work it all out.

Intervals - How they relate to just about everything in musical theory

Scales - Major Scales suited to the pieces played in the Manx Saxophone Ensemble

Future additions will include ....

- Musical terms and expressions

- Musical Symbols

- Aural training

- Scales and Modes

- Pentatonic and Blues Scales and how to use them in improvisation

... And then we’ll start to get serious about theory !

Keep watching - more soon,

Jem Cotton, Music Director, M.S.E.
